Holtzman is proud of its Diversity & Inclusion Initiative, which is designed to help strengthen our culture and our community. Today we are talking to George Gomez, Accounting Manager and proud member of the Election Information subcommittee. George took time out of his schedule to let us know why Holtzman and the Election Information subcommittee matter to him.
I started with Holtzman in late October 2018, about 2 years and 10 months ago. My journey began, many years ago interestingly enough, in the trucking industry back in my hometown of El Paso, Texas. I worked my way from data entry to Controller, while still working on my Bachelor’s degree from UTEP. This was after discharging from the Air Force.
What do diversity and inclusion mean to you?
Diversity and inclusion go hand in hand. I don’t think you can “truly” have one without the other. Diversity gives us access to other points of view, that may be different than ours. Diversity and inclusion matter to me because we are stronger as a result of them. When I was in the military, I had to work hand in hand, often in difficult situations with people of different cultures and or ethnicities, all for a common goal.
Why did you choose to join the Election Information subcommittee?
I joined the Election Information subcommittee because I felt passionate about this topic. The mission of our subcommittee is to empower and give our staff real-time information on any upcoming local, state, and or federal elections, and where to cast their vote without any biases or opinions. Our goal is to increase voter turnout and voting awareness. I believe many of us do not take voting as seriously as we should, and it is our duty and not just our right to be more involved in our government.
In your opinion, how does Holtzman support diversity and inclusion?
Holtzman has always been at the forefront of diversity and inclusion. Our employees come from many different backgrounds and ethnicities. The Election Information subcommittee is but one example of how Holtzman tries to include all of us. We are all welcome to join and make contributions that are worthwhile and measurable. They just don’t “talk the talk,” they “walk the walk.”
