Diversity Spotlight: Rebecca Brown, Executive Assistant

April is Celebrate Diversity Month, a time to recognize and honor the diversity surrounding us. While diversity allows us to recognize the differences among us (including ethnicity, gender, disability, culture, religion, age, and sexual identity), we must also build an inclusive environment where those differences are welcomed and respected. Holtzman’s Diversity & Inclusion Initiative is designed to create that environment for employees while also helping to serve our clients and communities. We are making great progress with our efforts and wanted to take this opportunity to profile the subcommittees and people that comprise our wider initiative and how they are making an impact. Join us throughout the month as we mark this occasion with content around diversity to advocate, influence, and inspire.

Celebrate Diversity MonthIn today’s spotlight Q&A, meet Rebecca Brown, an Executive Assistant and proud member of Holtzman’s Diversity Affinity Group!

  1. How long have you been at Holtzman? How did your journey begin?

I started at Holtzman in March 2020, just before the pandemic hit. I have been in an administrative role for many years. I started in the legal field in my hometown of San Diego, California, and got into accounting in 2017 after our move to Austin.

  1. You recently joined Holtzman’s Diversity & Inclusion Initiative. What do diversity and inclusion mean to you?

Growing up I found it hard to find my place, but inclusion means everyone has a place. Diversity and inclusion matter to me because I have an interracial family and we are raising multi-racial children and we never want them to be excluded because of what they look like. Acceptance and inclusion can make a difference in the world.

  1. Why did you choose to join the Affinity Group subcommittee? What is their mission?

I joined the Affinity Group subcommittee because I want to be involved. The mission of the Affinity Group is to find local organizations in our community that support diversity and inclusion that we can become involved with. We provide opportunities for Holtzman employees to become active in the community. The group also supports activities for internal Holtzman affinity groups like the Women’s Initiative, Working Parents Group, and Wellness Group and is open to starting more groups that will allow Holtzman employees to feel supported and empowered.

  1. In your opinion, how does Holtzman support diversity and inclusion?

Holtzman supports diversity and inclusion by taking their initiative seriously. Holtzman has employees from many different racial backgrounds, countries, and cultures. Holtzman has multiple diversity subcommittees: Affinity, Election, Business, and Education. There are many ways employees can become involved if they choose. All our subcommittees have completed their short-term goals and are working on the long-term goals. Holtzman shows that the Diversity & Inclusion Initiative isn’t just words, it’s actions.
