Mya Kelly was recently promoted to Holtzman’s Director of Human Resources. She has been recognized for formalizing and implementing our firm’s HR systems, policies, and programs as our firm has continued to expand. In her role, Mya oversees employee engagement initiatives, employee training and development, recruitment, workforce planning, and compliance activities. We caught up with Mya, to learn more about her HR career journey, what inspires her most during these challenging times, and what has led to her success and growth on the path to Director. Here is what she had to say.
What qualities do you feel make you a successful HR professional?
As an HR professional, I am most proud of being a servant leader, an advocate for growth and development (for my team and my employee base), being empathic to others, and leading with the heart. Lessons that I have found most valuable on my career path are giving grace and flexibility where needed, having a strong moral compass, and holding myself to the highest of standards. In my role, I must also maintain confidentiality, incorporate continuing educating, and stay abreast of legal legislation that impacts the workforce. I am also proud to be active in the community and volunteer on HR committees, which has given me valuable opportunities to grow as a professional and continue to expand my professional network.
What are you most eager to tackle in your new leadership role?
I am really looking forward to developing and coordinating training opportunities for Holtzman’s service lines, including our administrative support business unit.
How has being a part of Holtzman shaped you into the leader you are today?
Holtzman has given me a new perspective in all facets (personally and professionally). A strong driver of our firm’s success is a result of our strong culture and how we engage with our people. Here at Holtzman, our employees are more than just a number, they are family. And in that, my leadership is one that leads with heart, empathy, and consideration.
What has been your favorite project/client engagement at Holtzman so far?
To date, my favorite project would have to be streamlining HR processes and scaling the business. It has been amazing to see our firm continue to grow!
What has been the most challenging part of your career?
Striking a balance. I absolutely LOVE HR and over the years it has been challenging not to stop working until I accomplish the work I need to get done to support our employees.
Amid these challenges, what has been your biggest motivator?
What keeps me motivated, is being in a position where I can give employees the resources and tools that they need to feel supported and secure, especially during this unpredictable year.
What inspired you to choose this career path?
I was drawn to the HR field because it allows me to influence, educate, and support others.
What is your best advice for HR professionals today?
Do not get complacent. Always strive to be better than you were yesterday. Challenge yourself. Give back. Maintain balance. And most importantly, stay grounded.
