Before joining Armanino, Mark was a partner at Holtzman Partners and had worked on an FDIC engagement with Deloitte’s IT audit and consulting group. Mark serves on the board of directors of the Austin Symphonic Band. He’s also quite the handyman. Q&A

Q. What was it that drew you to Armanino?
I work with many technology startups, and I love the fast-paced environment. What drew me to Armanino was their entrepreneurial spirit. I like to stay as close to the cutting edge as possible, so the fact that Armanino focuses heavily on technology was fundamental.
Q. What law or regulation in the accounting industry would you like to see changed?
I think that Sarbanes-Oxley needs updating for the current century. There are some areas around auditor and company independence, the ways companies go public, shareholder needs and requirements that could be updated to better serve investors.
Q. Without naming names, tell us about your favorite client and why you enjoyed working with them.
Being able to grow alongside our clients has been so beneficial. I've worked with companies that started from the ground up and are now large public companies. We've been through multiple mergers and acquisitions with these companies, and it is rewarding and fulfilling to see these companies grow.
Q. What keeps you up at night?
I find that there is a lot more that wakes me up in the morning than keeps me up at night. I like to try and stay positive and not dwell on things.
Q. Who is (or was) the most influential person in your life?
No question, my dad. He is an amazing father and an even greater grandfather. My dad grew up on a cattle ranch. When his father passed away, he took a year off from school to close the family business. Once all the family affairs were in order, he returned to Oklahoma State for undergrad, got his Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Missouri and became a professor at Texas A&M. He is retired now. I got to watch him develop professionally, which has helped me grow in my own life.
Q. If you could pass on a nugget of wisdom to aspiring accountants or consultants, what would that be?
The more you can speak on trends and technology, the more ready you'll be for the enormous shifts that are coming and have already occurred in our industry. Our world is full of knowledge, and it is important to continue learning at all times, especially in the field of technology.
